Biographies

This site includes select biographies (listed at left) for database-represented architects and firms. The biographies are largely authored by Maine State Historian Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr., and based his work with the Maine Historic Preservation Commission.

While serving as Maine Historic Preservation Commission's (MHPC) director, 1976-2015, Shettleworth spearheaded the Biographical Dictionary of Architects in Maine, a project to document historic architects, engineers, and builders throughout the state. Through a series of short essays and checklists. The Biographical Dictionary is an ongoing project, available full text through the Commission's website.

Several architects listed at left are represented in the Biographical Dictionary of Architects in Maine; while others do not yet have a listing. Researchers are encouraged to review both resources for a given designer.
